Current state of Healthcare and Manna Project Clinics in Nicaragua
Managua is at the center of the political crisis that has impacted Nicaragua beginning April 18th. Travel throughout the city is difficult due to the daily protests and road blockades. There are currently twelve barricades throughout the city making travel to hospitals or public health clinics challenging. The public health centers have also been operating on a limited schedule due to protests and public transportation has been reduced. Due to the difficulty involved with traveling, more residents are turning to resources within their own immediate community.
In times of crisis, it is vital residents can still access basic health services. Our two clinics in Cedro Galán and Villa Guadalupe have remained open throughout the crisis and continue to provide high-quality, affordable health care to community members. Our dedicated local staff has continued to report to work daily in order to provide essential health care to community members. We also continue to work in collaboration with local partner organizations to provide family planning services, lab exams, and health education.
In the last few months, we saw a steady stream of patients at both our clinics. Physical health has been shown to be negatively impacted by stress. Over the past month, our clinics have seen an increase in patients who suffer from high blood pressure, headaches, and digestive problems, which are all common symptoms of stress. In addition, insured patients who previously utilized speciality health facilities have sought care at our clinics due to the difficulty and risk involved in traveling to other facilities.
For less than a dollar, our patients receive a high-quality medical consultation and any prescribed medication. The current crisis has had a strong economic impact and many community members have seen their income reduced due to job layoffs and the inability to report to work as a result of travel difficulties. Continued access to accessible health care is crucial for residents during this crisis who otherwise have no other viable options to seek care.
