Impact Stories

Romina’s Story: Creativity and Confidence Through Art

Every Wednesday afternoon, 10-year-old Romina eagerly joins Manna Project International’s art workshop, a space where creativity and self-expression flourish. Born in Colombia and now living in Shandia with her seven siblings, Romina’s journey is one of resilience and discovery.

For Romina, art is more than just an activity—it’s a way to learn, express herself, and build confidence. “I learned how to paint a person in the art workshop!” she shared excitedly. Her enthusiasm for creativity is boundless:

“Me gusta el taller de arte, me gusta la educación de arte, me gusta pintar, dibujar… y todo.”
(I like the art workshop, I like art education, I like painting, drawing… everything.)

Manna’s after-school programs provide children like Romina with opportunities to explore their passions, develop new skills, and dream big. Whether through painting, drawing, or other creative projects, these workshops offer more than just artistic techniques—they inspire confidence, joy, and a love of learning that extends far beyond the classroom.

Through programs like these, Manna Project International is fostering a generation of young learners who see endless possibilities for their future.

Javier’s Story: Preserving Heritage and Protecting Nature

Javier, a 34-year-old father of four, has dedicated his life to uplifting his community in Shandia. Whether leading communal projects or guiding visitors at the Shandia Community Lodge, his passion for preserving Kichwa heritage and protecting the environment is evident in everything he does.

At the heart of his work is the Sendero Kindy Pakcha Ecotrail, a space where visitors and locals alike can learn about Kichwa traditions, cultural preservation, and environmental stewardship. Using primarily local materials, Javier is developing a reception area, bathrooms, and a small restaurant where guests can enjoy authentic Kichwa cuisine, prepared using traditional methods.

Javier envisions the sendero as more than just a trail—it’s a place to inspire change. He hopes to see the youth of Shandia reconnect with their heritage and develop a deeper respect for nature. At the same time, he dreams of welcoming visitors from around the world to experience Shandia’s breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural traditions.

With support from MPI, Javier has made significant progress toward his vision. MPI volunteers have helped him clear the trail, making it more accessible for visitors, and continues to support his efforts to bring this project to life. Through his dedication and hard work, Javier is shaping a future where cultural heritage and environmental conservation go hand in hand.

Josue’s Story: From Student to Mentor

Josue’s journey with Manna Project International began as a student, but today, he’s giving back as a volunteer. An 18-year-old from Ecuador, Josue first joined MPI’s English program at our site in Chillos Valley, encouraged by his mother, who hoped it would provide him with new opportunities. Neither of them could have predicted how much those classes would shape his future.

Through MPI’s English program, Josue not only gained language skills but also confidence. His enthusiasm grew as he advanced through the four levels we offered, forming lasting connections along the way—including hosting MPI Program Directors for homestays with his family.

His passion for English led him to pursue high school studies in Los Angeles, where he became fluent. Now, back in Ecuador, Josue is paying it forward by volunteering remotely from Quito, mentoring new English learners at MPI’s site in Shandia. While he dreams of a future in quantum physics at institutions like CERN, he remains dedicated to supporting his community and empowering others through education.

Josue’s story is a testament to how access to education can transform lives—and how one student’s success can inspire a new generation of learners.
